Baltic Film, Media and Arts School, Centre of Excellence in Media Innovation and Digital Culture

Tallinn University is the largest university of humanities in Tallinn and the third biggest public university in Estonia. The university has set a goal to become the promoter of intelligent lifestyle in Estonia. As a result, the University has defined five interdisciplinary focus fields which also form the basis of its institutional structure: educational innovation, digital and media culture, cultural competences, healthy and sustainable lifestyle and society and open governance.

Baltic Film, Media and Arts School is a competence center for communication and audio-visual knowledge and expertise, focusing on various positions in film production, TV, new media, communication, choreography, art and music. It’s Centre of Excellence in Media Innovation and Digital Culture (MEDIT) was established in 2015 to study cultural change and innovation processes that accompany digital media. MEDIT aims to apply theoretical knowledge to experimenting with new and innovative forms of digital media and believes that interpreting and participating in contemporary cultural change requires cultural, economic and technological dynamics to be viewed as a single system.

Aarhus University (AU) has four faculties which cover the entire research spectrum – basic research, applied research, strategic research and research based advice to the authorities. Internationalisation is part of the University’s mission. AU has ample experience with large and ambitious training  programs and research projects.

Areas of focus include political and institutional perspectives, textual forms of expression, production conditions, media consumption, media history and media theory. AU media studies the focus is on traditional mass media, journalism, film and the new digital media, as well as the interplay between these forms. The program’s researchers apply a diverse range of theoretical and methodological approaches to the consumption, politics and production of media and contributed to the development of the field of media studies, through the investigation of the media’s function, organisation and forms of expression.

Media Studies and Journalism has a long tradition of collaboration with key players on the Danish and international media market through specific research projects, involvement of external partners in teaching, and in more general knowledge exchange and outreach activities.

The Centre has an excellent record of project collaborations, as project lead and as partner, on National, European and Internationally co-funded projects. The Centre has secured substantial European funding through Erasmus+, Interreg Europe, Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme and the European Social Fund.

Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology

SMIT (Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology) is a research group part of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel specialized in social scientific research on media and ICT.  With a staff of over 100 researchers, equally divided between PhD holders, PhD students and contract researchers; its goal is to understand the impact of technology on everyday practices and create design and strategic guidelines to shape innovation responding to user needs and expectations, thus empowering people and society. In order to do this, SMIT research combines user, policy and business analysis with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. It has a 25+ years research expertise in the area of European media policy and supports policy-makers, industry, and civil society on topics relating to media policy and economics, industry transformations, consumption, disinformation, etc.

Jönköping International Business School (JIBS), Media, Management and Transformation Centre (MMTC)

Jönköping University (JU) is one of three Swedish private, non-profit institutions of higher education with the right to award doctorates. Both within education and research, JU has a close cooperation with business and society. Jönköping International Business School is double-accredited by equis and AACSB for its excellence in education. The school has been ranked as a top institution for entrepreneurship research in Europe and worldwide. Entrepreneurship research is one of its three focus areas.

The Media, Management and Transformation Centre (MMTC) is one of three research centers at JIBS. Maintaining a strong foothold in media management and media entrepreneurship studies, the center recently broadened its focus to study the impact of the driving forces of digitalization, globalization and sustainability on business and industry transformation. Within JIBS’ curriculum, MMTC runs an MSc program on Digital Business. In terms of research output, more than 250 publications have been written by MMTC members since 2011 with more than 85 articles in well-established journals during the last 5 years.
